Raising awareness of Elder Abuse
Sep 19, 2025
Community Based Support recently hosted a talk on elder abuse, organised by our coordinator Emma Bruce. The session was delivered by Julie Andersson, Program Manager at COTA Tasmania, who spoke about the importance of recognising, preventing, and addressing the abuse of older people in our communities.
Julie introduced the concept of caring for people “from womb to tomb,” highlighting that abuse can occur at any stage of life, and that older people are particularly vulnerable. She shared statistics on elder abuse and explained the different forms it can take, including coercive control, psychological abuse and financial exploitation. Julie noted that many incidents are never reported due to feelings of shame, fear of retribution, concern for family relationships, or a desire to protect loved ones.
The session also explored the current legal framework. Julie explained that there is no compulsory reporting of elder abuse anywhere in Australia, with mandatory reporting only applying to staff and volunteers in certain care settings. In Tasmania, protection orders are unique in that they apply only to spouses or intimate partners.
Reflecting on the session, CBS staff member Rachael said, “It’s such important work and for me it highlighted the need for legislation to protect older people.”
To help prevent elder abuse, Julie encouraged planning ahead with safeguards such as a will, an advance care directive, a power of attorney, and enduring guardianship. These steps can provide clarity and security, helping to reduce risks and protect the wishes of older people.
As Julie emphasised, “Everyone deserves to live their life with respect and dignity, free from harm and abuse. The best way we can help is by listening, reassuring, and connecting people with the right services.”
